This group of ten weavers, who speak little to no Spanish, lives in a very small town in a remote area of Northern Guatemala. In fact, in a car it is an eight-hour journey to the capital city. With the help and guidance of Peace Corps Volunteer Carrie Hawthorne they have developed a design for handbags and purses that is totally unique in Guatemala and that is almost exclusively made for the export market. The group uses the traditional backstrap weaving technique (as you can see in the pictures) and only works with high quality materials. The group functions as an association, dividing up labor and profits equally among members. MayaSelect is presently the only distributor of their fine artisan work and has established a price that ensures that all workers receive an above average daily wage. | |||||||||||||
